7 Days Kilimanjaro Rongai Route and 3 Days Safari is comprised of Climbing Mountain Kilimanjaro via the Rongai route and following a three-day safari to the Tarangire National Park and Ngorongoro Crater.

This Kilimanjaro and safari package is specific for exploring Tanzania for 12 days with a climb and safari experience.

DAY 1: ARRIVE AT KILIMANJARO AIRPORT

Arrive at the Kilimanjaro International Airport. You will be met by our guide at the Airport and transferred to the hotel in Moshi.

DAY 2: RONGAI GATE TO RONGAI CAVE

We drive from Moshi to Marangu Gate for permits before taking a short transfer to the Rongai Gate trailhead. The path winds through corn and potato fields and then climbs gently through the forest which is home to a variety of wildlife, including the black and white colobus monkey.

Elevation: 6,398 ft to 9,300 ft

Distance: 8 km

Hiking Time: 3-4 hours

Habitat: Rain Forest

Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner.

Accommodation: Rongai Cave

Room plan: Double Occupancy (2 people will share 1 tent)

DAY 3: RONGAI CAVE TO SECOND CAVE THEN  KIKELEWA CAVE

We begin this morning with a steady incline up to Second Cave. We continue trekking though moorland, leaving the main trail for a smaller path towards the jagged peaks of Mawenzi, before finally arriving at Kikelewa Cave for the night.

Second Cave to Kikelewa Cave

Elevation: 11,300 ft to 11,811 ft

Distance: 6 km

Hiking Time: 3-4 hours

Habitat: Heath

DAY 4:KIKELEWA CAVE TO MAWENZI TARN

The hike today is short and steep up a grassy slope. Views of the wilderness area are stunning. As we exit the heath zone and emerge into the Alpine Desert zone, the landscape changes dramatically. Our camp is situated beneath the jagged spires of Mawenzi, at Mawenzi Tarn. The remainder of the day can be spent relaxing or exploring the area.

Hiking Time: 3-4 hours

Habitat: Alpine Desert

Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner.

Accommodation: Mawenzi Tarn

Room plan: Double Occupancy (2 people will share 1 tent)

DAY 5: MAWENZI TARN TO MAWENZI RIDGE

Mawenzi Ridge to Mawenzi Tarn Elevation (ft): 14,400 ft -14,160 ft Distance: 2 km Hiking Time: 1-2 hours Habitat: Alpine Desert This is an extra day meant for acclimatization and can be spent day hiking on Mawenzi Ridge. The unique landscape offers motivating views of Kibo and Mawenzi. After spending a few moments exploring the area we head back to Mawenzi Tarn for camp.

Hiking Time: 1-2 hours

Habitat: Alpine Desert

DAY 6: MAWENZI TARN TO KIBO HUT

We climb gradually, then cross the lunar desert of the “Saddle” between Mawenzi and Kibo. Our camp, Kibo Hut, sits at the bottom of the Kibo crater wall. Once here we rest, enjoy an early dinner to prepare for the summit day.

Hiking Time: 5-6 hours

Habitat: Alpine Desert

Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner.

Accommodation: Kibo Hut

Room plan: Double Occupancy (2 people will share 1 tent)

DAY 7: KIBO HUT TO UHURU PEAK

Very early in the morning (around midnight), we begin our push to the summit. This is the most mentally and physically challenging portion of the trek. The wind and cold at this elevation and time of day can be extreme. We ascend in the darkness for several hours while taking frequent, but short, breaks. At Gilman’s point (18,600 ft), you will be rewarded with the most magnificent sunrise you are ever likely to see coming over Mawenzi Peak. Finally, we arrive at Uhuru Peak- the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the continent of Africa. After spending a few moments taking in the plains of Africa and your accomplishment, we descend to Horombo Hut. Later in the evening, we enjoy our last dinner on the mountain and a well-earned sleep.

Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut

Elevation (ft): 19,341 ft to 12,250 ft

Distance: 16 km

Hiking Time: 4-5 hours

Habitat: Heath

Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner.

Accommodation: Horombo Hut

Room plan: Double Occupancy (2 people will share 1 tent)

DAY 8: HOROMBO HUT TO MARANGU GATE 

Forest On our last day, we have a long trek mostly downhill through the tropical rainforest. Once at the park headquarters at Marangu gate, we collect our summit certificates. A vehicle will meet us here and drive us back to the hotel in Moshi.

Distance: 20 km

Hiking Time: 5-7 hours

Habitat: Rain

DAY 9: LAKE MANYARA NATIONAL PARK 

Lake Manyara is a beautiful little park that is famous for its tree-climbing lions, elephants, and large troops of baboons. The park is home to an amazing variety of birds and animals considering its small size. A short visit to this serene park will greatly diversify your safari experience as the lush green jungle habitat is in stark contrast to the other parks you will visit during your safari, Later in the evening, we will drive to Karatu overnight.

DAY 10: NGORONGORO CRATER 

Very early morning we drive down the Ngorongoro Crater walls to the Crater floor where we will spend the better part of the day doing game drives in this 8th wonder of the world also referred to as the Eden of Africa. Here we will get the chance to spot the animals with a little luck you can spot the Big 5 that is; Elephants, Lions, Leopards, Buffaloes, and Rhinos, in a single day’s game drive.

Accommodation:  Eileen’s Tree Inn or a similar lodge in Karatu.

DAY 11: TARANGIRE NATIONAL PARK THEN DRIVE BACK TO MOSHI

After breakfast, we will drive to Tarangire National Park then we will register at the gate and continue with game drives for the rest of the day as we explore the African wilderness for the last day of our safari. This park is famous for its large populations of elephants and its gigantic age-old baobabs, but it has much more to offer in terms of many animals and birds that are resident to this park. We expect to see lions, cheetahs, warthogs, gazelles, dik-diks, the rare long-necked gerenuks, and many more and in the late afternoon, we will head to Moshi for overnight and this will be the end of the safari.

DAY 12: DEPARTURE DAY

We will transfer you from the hotel to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) where you will fly back home.if you will have more time you can extend to Zanzibar, but additional cost will be required.
