KILIMANJARO EMERGENCY EVACUATION PROCEDURES

At Eco-Africa Climbing,  Safety is our utmost priority for both our clients and our team when climbing Kilimanjaro. Every year, climbers face the risks of extreme altitude, and unfortunately, fatalities occur if not properly monitored and treated. Your guides meticulously monitor your health throughout the journey, ensuring early detection of any issues. Our tour company follows a comprehensive Safety Management System, establishing clear objectives, conducting detailed risk assessments, and continuously improving safety protocols based on feedback. On the mountain, we provide emergency oxygen, a fully stocked first aid kit, oximeters for monitoring vital signs, mobile phones for communication, and thorough safety briefings by our guides. Our medically trained team, including High Altitude First Responders, guarantees climbs conducted to the highest standards, with mountain crew also trained to assist in emergencies.

 

Understanding the Importance of Rescuing Procedures

In the realm of Kilimanjaro climb , emergencies can arise unexpectedly. Whether it’s a hiking accident, a medical emergency, or a natural disaster, having robust rescuing procedures in place is essential for mitigating risks and ensuring the safety of everyone involved. Our rescuing procedures are designed to address a wide range of potential emergencies and to provide prompt and effective assistance when needed.

 

Key Components of Our Emergency Evacuation  Procedures

 

Before the Climb

We usually insure our climber has Insurance which cover up to 6000 meters above the sea level which can help them in case of emergency, we also recommend the our climber to see their doctors before coming to Kilimanjaro and we usually ask them if they have any medical challenges so as our Mountain team can be aware of this.During our climb brief, our experienced guides conduct thorough safety briefings to educate climber about potential risks and safety protocols. We also ensure that all climber are equipped with the necessary safety gears and that they understand how to use it properly.

We also ask the climber if they have any healthy problem so as to be aware and the type of medicine they are using like Diamox and we usually ask them how they are going to use accordingly to their doctors recommendation.

 

During the Climb

Our guide provide safety brief each day and we also monitor our client healthy by monitor their oxygen level using oximeter twice a day and records their medical report. And we usually incourage our climber to tell us how they feel each day and we motivate them and tell them about all the sign of altitude sickness. Our guide carry the medicate kit, emergency oxygen during the entire climb  while working with the climber.

 

Before the Summit

Our guide provide intensive safety brief before the climb and all necessary  information which the climber supposed to know while attempt Kilimanjaro summit and also all the procedure of evacuation  in case they incur any problem during their attempt to summit while ascend to the summit  or descend to the summit of Kilimanjaro.

 

Emergency Evacuation Procedures in case of any Incident during the climb

In the event of a serious emergency that requires evacuation, our Mountain crew  is equipped to execute swift and efficient evacuation procedures. We have established evacuation routes and protocols for various scenarios, including medical emergencies, natural disasters, and inclement weather conditions. Our priority is to evacuate affected individuals safely and expediently to the nearest medical facility or safe location. Our guide usually take the climber report and make decision before make the decision to take the climb our of the mountain. Incase our climber fail to continue with the climb, our guide will  have to evacuate the climber on the mountain by using the two methods

 

Evacuate by Kilimanjaro Rescues Helicopter

For emergency evacuation during the Kilimanjaro climb, we are working with KILI MEDAIR, who provide Kilimanjaro Helicopter Rescue operations, ensuring the safety of everyone on Mount Kilimanjaro.

Kili MedAir is committed to ensuring your safety while enjoying a beautiful adventure at Mount Kilimanjaro for a reliable and efficient helicopter evacuation in any distress situation. For a successful helicopter evacuation on Mount Kilimanjaro, one should acquire travel insurance covering the medical Evacuation of 6000 meters above sea level.

It would be best to have insurance that covers emergency evacuation 6,000 meters above Sea Level to use this service. When they evacuate you on the Mountain, all the costs are covered by your insurance.

We highly recommend that you get insurance with Evacuation coverage up to 6,000 meters above Sea Level in case of any emergency during the climb.

Evacuate by Take the climber down to the Juction

In a scenario  the helicopter is not able to land  due to weather condition or the emergency occur  around  7 pm which is the hours the helicopter rescue cannot operate, we will take the climber down  by using stretcher or the climb will walk down if she or he will be in a good state of walking, so they climber will be taking to the junction area whereby  at the junction it the place whereby Kilimanjaro National Park  ambulance will be able to rescue the climber and take he or she to the nearby hospital as this depends on the descend route it will be.

 

Communication Protocols

Effective communication is crucial during emergency situations. That’s why we have established clear communication protocols to ensure seamless coordination between our guides, staff members, and emergency response team. We utilize a variety of communication devices, mobile phones, to maintain constant contact and facilitate swift response times, as now there is good receptions on the mountain and internet so it make the communication to be easily at the time of emergency

At Eco-Africa Climbing, we have a dedicated emergency response team consisting of highly trained professionals with expertise in wilderness first aid, search and rescue techniques, and emergency evacuation procedures. Our Mountain Crew undergoes regular training and drills to ensure that they are prepared to handle any emergency situation that may arise

Take Note:

  • Go slowly; give your body a chance to adapt. Take a long route, and don’t be in a hurry on the trail.
  • Drink plenty of water, and more so if you are using Diamox
  • Tell your guide immediately if you feel unwell, have a headache, nausea, or other symptoms.
